FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The City of Takoma Park has been selected as a National Award Winner for its outstanding participation in the “26th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime, drug and violence prevention program. The National Association of Town Watch, who sponsors this event, will be bestowing a special award recognizing Takoma Park’s achievements in the NNO 2009 campaign.
National Night Out 2009 involved 36.7 million people in 14,625 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide.
National Night Out would not have been made possible without the help and support of our elected officials, department heads, police officers, employees, apartment managers, other police departments, volunteers, citizens, local businesses, and Emergency Response Teams. All these groups volunteered their time and services in order to make Takoma Park’s National Night Out an immensely successful event.
The success of any police department is contingent upon the involvement of the community and National Night Out provides us with the reminder that the police alone cannot be the sole providers of safety and security in a community. Citizen involvement and participation is instrumental in addressing crime and crime prevention in communities. National Night Out is a time for us to reinforce our commitment to strengthening police community partnerships.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION - A Message from the Chief of Police
The cold weather is upon us. Although many of us would like to start our cars and have them warm by the time we slip into them for the drive to work, school, etc., it is not a good safety habit. You cannot leave your vehicle running. You must lock it up. Leaving your car running leaves the perfect opportunity for it to be stolen. Some criminals may “hang” around your neighborhood and watch you go out, start the car and go back into your residence. Easily taken. Be careful at day-cares and schools. Parents who are rushing to get their children inside may leave the car running to make it easier when they come back out. There’s nothing easy about having your car stolen. If you have acquired the habit of leaving your car running unattended, spare yourself and break it. A criminal will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. The more time having to spend stealing a car, the greater the chance of detection. That’s why they take the easy route - it’s faster. Don’t help them out! Please, maintain good safety habits as we approach the winter season.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION - Engraving Equipment
As the holidays approach, please keep in mind a service offered by the Takoma Park Police Department. We have engraving equipment for personal property. If you wish to use it, please come to the Takoma Park Police Department, Administrative Services, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and it can be checked out to you. It is checked out for no longer than two weeks. There is no cost associated with the use of the engraver. Many people use the engraver to engrave identifying information on electronic equipment, such as lap tops, GPS machines, iPods, cell phones, etc. in case of theft. If property after a theft is then recovered, it is easily reunited with the owner. This is especially important with the coming holidays.
